Sponsor a Child

Sponsor a child

Child sponsorship is one of the best ways of supporting the children in the developing world. When you decide to sponsor a child, you are helping to rescue a vulnerable child from destitution and restoring hope into an otherwise hopeless situation.

EVERLAND HAITI SPONSORSHIP PROGRAM

There are so many children in desperate need in Haiti that it would be virtually impossible to provide for them all. However, MJL Children's World is committed to helping as many children as is humanely possible. Sponsorship aims to offer the opportunity of education, to give hope to the next generations, and to break the cycle of poverty by providing the basic needs for survival.

All of the children being offered for sponsorship are in desperate need. They come from backgrounds of neglect and poverty. Many are given to the community by the local hospital, where they have been abandoned by a parent that is too young or too poor to care for them. Others have been tragically disposed of and subsequently rescued from rubble and wasteland.

These babies are much too young to have a big story. They are children who are dependent on carers for everything: uniform, school materials, food, clothes, shoes. Without help, they will just remain in village, begging for food and surviving in whatever way they can. Some will make it, some will not.

Why sponsor a child?

One of the best ways of helping is through child sponsorship. Sponsorship gives a child an opportunity to go to school, to receive an education with access to medical care and a nourishing meal. The children you see available for sponsorship in Haiti are either living at Everland Children's Home (0-2) or attending day care facilities/preschool (3-5 inclusive). On turning 6, they go to the regular primary school in the locality where sponsorship will go towards school fees, school books and a 10 o'clock snack.

Visiting and gifts

Sponsors are encouraged to visit. In fact, there is a Michael Guest Room for this very purpose! Gifts are limited to one or two items and sponsors will be given an address for where to send gifts once per year, in time for Christmas. The girls love dolls and dresses. The boys enjoy receiving balls, toy cars and instruments. Greetings cards and family photographs make ideal gifts, alongside small items like pencils, combs, bookmarks or stickers.

If a sponsor would like to send a gift for a child's birthday, they are encouraged to send money so that a gift can be bought in Haiti. Mail is very unreliable in Haiti and sending money instead of gifts ensures that the child gets a gift on time, and receives a gift conducive to their particular preferences. When sending money for a child's birthday, it should be sent at least a month before the child's birthday, to arrive in good time and to give carers ample time to buy a gift.  Children at MJ Children's World enjoy a monthly party on the last Friday or Saturday of each month when those children born during that month celebrate their birthday(s). This is a perfect time for them to receive gifts.

Cost of sponsorship

Sponsorship costs just £240 ($396 USD) per year (that's £20/$33 USD per month) which goes towards the child's care, including meals and unexpected medical expenses, plus a stipend for the maid, the cook and the caretakers, Mr.and Mrs. Pastor Paul.  When you sponsor a child, you will enjoy regular updates and over time, you will get to know a little more about your child and his/her own personal history.

As a sponsor, you are officially a 'co-mum' of a needy child and begin right away in making a difference to that child's life. Not only is your generosity and trust treated with integrity and gratitude, but every project we are involved with has the children and Michael at the heart of all that we do.

“If one person would just help one child they’ve done so much and if you can do that, it would be beautiful, just to help one person would be a lot…it’s a big step forward because it’s a lot to be done, and children all over the world are in such need.” - Michael Jackson
